Local Media Futures and Democratic Health

As media platforms and social networks continue to grow in size, scope, and reach, there is renewed interest in the role of local media in supporting community and democratic health. Robust local media and news infrastructures support a strong sense of community, a stronger understanding of democratic processes, and a stronger connection to those around us.

Over the last decade, much has been written and researched about the risks associated with a lack of local media infrastructures in communities. While calls to return to some past utopian models are shortsighted, there is a need to explore new emergent local media models and their role in supporting healthy communities locally, nationally, and globally. The emergence of generative AI has further exacerbated the need to understand how communities find and connect to credible media outlets and build trust around them.

Program Fees: 

The program fee is 5085 USD*. The fee includes program participation, excursions and study trips, stationery, as well as meals and accommodation on a twin sharing basis at Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron or the adjacent Meierhof building.

The fee does not cover travel and visa costs to Salzburg. Participants must make their own arrangements for the same. We can provide participants an invitation letter and confirmation of room & board for visa applications if required.

*The Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change is not offering additional scholarships this year. We recommend that applicants reach out to their universities for potential funding opportunities.

Cancellation Fee:

In case of cancellation, a participant may transfer registration to another member of the participant's organization (city, department, firm, etc.) upon mutual agreement. Alternatively: 

Cancellation more than 60 days before the program: 100% refund 

Cancellation less than 60 days and more than 30 days before the event: 50% refund 

Cancellation less than 30 days, but more than 14 days: 25% refund 

Cancellation less than 14 days: no refund
